INTRODUCTION:

Depression is a phenomenon of decreasing demand for raw materials, products, and services. For example, in the United States a recession is said to exist when the gross national product (GNP) declines for two consecutive quarters, or when the leading economic indicators (LEIs) decline for three straight months, or when the index of the Association of Purchasing Managers dips below 50 points. Whichever the case, recession requires marketing managers to modify their marketing strategy and action in order to stay both profitable and consumer-responsive. This generally means adapting the marketing mix and/or changing the target markets.

DEFINITION:

Recession has been defined in the marketing literature as a “process of decreasing demand for raw materials, products and services, including labor” (Sharma 1978) or as a “state in which the demand for a product is less than its former level” (Kotler 1973).

COMPANIES AFFECTED AND UNAFFECTED:

Recessions are selective. Recessions impact some industries, products and regions of the country hard and bypass others entirely. Among the industries and products most affected are: automobiles, home furnishings, large appliances, travel and airlines, convenience foods, aluminum, steel, petrochemicals and synthetic fibers. Relatively unaffected are: liquor and wine, tobacco, small appliances, packaged goods, computer and service industries.

 Companies that are Selling Basic Necessities Survive a Recession.

             In particular, companies that manufacture the basic necessities of life are least affected by the recession. People still need to eat, wash their laundry, clean their homes, practice personal hygiene, and feed their pets. Discount giants such as BJs, Costco, and Aldi continue to open their doors week after week as consumers arrive to purchase necessities and simple pleasures. Discount stores such as Wal-Mart, Kmart, Kohls, Target, and discount pet stores continue to sell to loyal customers as well as new ones looking for less expensive goods than they are used to buying. Company health care giants such as Johnson & Johnson continue to see profits despite the economic downturn. Likewise, companies producing articles for daily use such as Procter & Gamble and Kraft Foods also carry on without experiencing too much of a pinch in their sales quotas. Fast food restaurants also continue to hold strong ground against the effects of the recession as more and more people opt for a less expensivemealout.

Companies that Sell Simple Pleasures Survive a Recession

             Discretionary types of spending that are the first to be given up include expensive meals or nights out on the town. In turn, the alternatives that people select to replace these activities are going to experience a surge of increased consumerism. So, as more and more people stay home to save on gas  while avoiding big ticket expenses, companies selling computer hardware and peripherals, basic needs, and simple pleasures are holding their own.

             Companies selling the simple pleasures in life, also referred to as guilty pleasures or sin stocks, will continue to do well as many consumers attempt to keep their spending habits under control with small indulgences. These simple pleasures include such items as gourmet chocolates, beer, alcohol, cigarettes, DVDs, CDs, and video games.

             Since parents aim to keep their children happy, even in times of economic trouble, toys will continue to be another big seller.

 IMPACT OF RECESSION ON PEOPLE’S SHOPPING AND TRAVELLING IN UK

Flat-screen TVs UP 17.5%                                      Low-energy bulbs UP 38.8%

HOUSING BUBBLE

The Economist magazine, writing at the same time, went further, saying “the worldwide rise in house prices is the biggest bubble in history”. Real estate bubbles are followed by a price decrease (also known as a housing price crash) that can result in many owners holding negative equity (a mortgage debt higher than the current value of the property).

ADVERTISING AND THE OPPORTUNITIES

The question of advertising during a recession is one that has been asked many times over many years. Interestingly, the answer still does not seem clear to enough marketers.

The answer to the question is that advertising during a recession provides a unique window of opportunity for investment purposes to:

1) Build equity         2) Solidify your customer base           3) Gain new customers and

4) Make inroads on your competitors who have cut their advertising during the recession period. This window of opportunity is created by the understanding that advertising is an investment, not an expense.

Companies that have taken advantage of advertising during a recession to establish strong market positions while developing brand equity include such diverse company names as Bristol Myers, Campbell Soup, Coca-cola, Gillette, Nabisco, Pillsbury, Procter and Gamble, R.J. Reynolds, Rubbermaid, Levi Strauss, Stroh Brewery, United Airlines and Welsh Foods-among others.

McGraw-Hill Research study of over 600 Businesses found that:

1981-1982 …. Business that maintained or increased their ad spend during this time

* Averaged higher sales growth during the recession and in the following 3 years! By 1985 …. Sales of the businesses that maintained or increased their ad spend during that recession
* Sales had risen 256% over those that had cut back on advertising
Likewise in 2001 …. Another study found that aggressive recession advertisers
* Increased market share 2 ½ times the average for all businesses in the post-recession

In 2002 …. The Strategic planning institute illustrated that during economic expansion

* Although 80% of businesses increased their advertising spend there was NO improvement in market share

* Why? – Because everyone has increase ad spending!

ONLINE MARKETERS:

Many sites have experienced a few sales decline and are trying to cut short their budgets and focusing on some other areas too, but as the time passing it’s now just a reason that many companies are giving for the firing their employees and cost cutting.

Survive Online Recession with Internet Marketing Techniques

Recession has over-shadowed all business worldwide making it difficult for companies to survive and earn profits. World Wide Web is also experiencing the pinch of this global financial mess.

Tips to survive:

 Blogging                          PPC marketing            Social networking

1.Convert your analysis according to customer insights.

2.Convert your insight into some real action.

3.Repeat the above steps as and when required.

Recession will impact search marketing

We can see some of the leading Internet search stocks taking a hit in the recent past. Google down 38%, Yahoo lay off 10 – 20% of its staff.

INDIAN SITUATION:

The official estimates of GDP growth for the first two quarters of 2008/9 stayed above 7.5 percent. However, industry-wide indications after September are uniformly gloomy.

There are reports of significant declines in output of automobiles, commercial vehicles, steel, textiles, petrochemicals, construction, real estate, finance, retail activity and many other sectors. Exports fell by 12 percent in dollar terms in October and advance information points to a similar decline in November. After September, the economy seems almost to have gone over a cliff.

COMMODITY BOOM

In January 2008, oil prices surpassed 0 a barrel for the first time, the first of many price milestones to be passed in the course of the year. In July 2008, oil peaked at 7.30 a barrel and a gallon of gasoline  was more than across most of the U.S.A. These high prices caused a dramatic drop in demand and prices fell below a barrel at the end of 2008. There is concern that if the economy was to improve, oil prices might return to pre-recession levels.

In the second half of 2008, the prices of most commodities fell dramatically on expectations of diminished demand in a world recession.

RELATIONSHIP IN CRISIS

           Consumers feel somehow abandoned by big brands. In a way they feel brands are indifferent to their situation and don’t do anything for them. Comparing the period of Jan/Nov 99 with Jan/Nov 98, prices in supermarkets went down by an average of 5%.            During the recession all supermarkets, despite their positioning, base their communication on price and, compared to FMCG categories, increase their ad spending.

  3) Communicate price reduction to reinforce brand proposition.

CONCLUSION:

Thus the depression calls for marketing managers to use strategies to stimulate consumer demand. Such strategies often require a redefinition of the target customers and the marketing mix. They may include narrowing the product line, offering cheaper products and quantity discounts, lowering prices, increasing promotion, and offering products directly to consumers.

Does Affiliate Marketing Really work? I can now answer that question and the answer is a resounding yes! I started  Internet Marketing with The Wealthy Affiliate University on 22nd June 2009 and despite there being a recession I have already made Sales!

Affiliate Marketing is not the easiest way to make money but once established your web site will work for you 24 hours a day 7 days a week and 365b days in a year! If you are prepared to work hard and follow the advice given to you by the experts (in my case Kyle and Carson at the Wealthy Affiliate University), then after just one to two months effort you will make money.

Things to remember are:

You must find an appropriate niche, this is an area that is under served in the market and that has people wanting to buy the product, whatever you choose, in my case Classical Guitars.
You need to research the appropriate keywords to optimize you site for.
You need to write an original article using the keywords in its theme that will benefit your buying public and put this on your site.
You should write a series of related articles and get these published on various different web publication sites (E Zine, Squidoo, Weebly, Blogger, scribd etc.) the more the merrier but at least 10.
Get back links to your site which should have been chosen to include one of your main keywords in its URL
Publish your site in as many web directories as you can.
Treat the whole exercise as one in giving value to your public, all your articles should be original and self penned.
Join as many social networking sites as you can and include your URl in your bio section, but be careful to follow the site rules and also provide links to other URL’s not your own to add value to your public.
Keep writing articles on an ongoing basis and getting them published, this will help your back links as your bio will be included whenever a legitimate article is published.
Read as much as you can on your selected topic and follow what the market is asking for. Use Google Reader, Yahoo Answers etc. etc.

If you follow this pattern you will find that your site will be picked up by the Google spider and subsequently Yahoo and Bing etc. Then all you have to do is keep on doing more of the same and your web ranking will increase with time. It is important to get and keep a first page ranking, if you can, as approximately 45% of the traffic goes to the first position and less than 10% gets past the first page.

There are some fantastic tools that you can use to help analyze your web sites position and the best of these are from Google and they are free! This definitely works and anyone who is prepared to work at it can do it, I know because I did! Good luck in your efforts.

If you’re new to online marketing and are making minimal profits for your hours of effort….I feel your pain and hope this article will ease it a little.

Internet Marketing is not as easy as you first thought, and you’ve suffered a few learning curves along the way to where you are now.

Your family and friends have told you, you’re wasting your time on the internet. And you’re beginning to think they are right.

But you would be dead wrong to give up on marketing now. Just as wrong as a student dropping out of high school before he had the time to graduate.

You have to realize when you enter any new business, you’re the small fish in the sea.

Here you are the little fish internet marketer trying to carve out a niche for yourself online, and the internet is like a huge sea full of sharks and other predators who eat small fish like you and me for snacks.

We would be better served to acknowledge this, and look at ourselves as just pilot fish swimming under an online shark, trying to grab some of the left over’s that the massive internet fish eats.

In our case, the massive internet fish is corporate marketing. They own the internet.

Who of us little guys can compete with their multi million dollar marketing campaigns? Most of the time they lose money on internet marketing just to get rid of their competition….(That would be you and I by the way).

So, what can we do to combat and compete against corporate advertising to become a successful on-line marketer?

Try these 3 Online Marketing Strategies to boost your online income.

1) Research Your Product and Find Some Leftovers the Shark Missed.

Identify the market you’re in and educate yourself on the product you want to promote.

Pick a product that compliments a high ticket item like an Ipad that the shark would sell, and you sell the Ipad accessories.

Only choose those products you yourself would use.

Some expert internet marketers can sell anything, but you are just starting out. Pick something you will feel comfortable spending some time working with.

2) Write Informative Articles, Blogs and Reviews about Your Product.

Go to sites like Facebook and Myspace and join social groups like Google Groups or Friend Finder and post your blogs or links.

Viral marketing is the wave for 2009. Write like a maniac on every site you can find, then link the sites and articles to one another.

3) Invest in a Landing Page and Auto Responder System.

All that writing and advertising is time well spent if you invest in a good landing page and auto responder system.

It’s possible the person who clicked on your ad or article was just window shopping until payday came. If you have captured their email address you can keep them informed and updated to information they may have missed about your product on their first visit, and when payday comes, your site will be first in line for them to review again.

It’s a fact that there are more sales made via email than anywhere on the internet.

Create own website is an absolute must if you want to be successful in Internet Marketing Online when you are starting out to make an income working from home.

Most people fall into the trap of trying to do too much, too soon and get involved in jumping from hopping from one program to another, fail very early on and that is because of insufficient planning and lack of use of all the Internet tools that are available to everyone.

If you are considering starting an online business, it is a decision that should not be taken lightly and only after careful consideration – if you consider it a great way to “get rich quick” forget it!

An Internet business is like any other conventional business, it requires resources, planning, intelligence, patience and persistence.

There is actually a PROCESS to being successful online and ultimately making money. There are any number of strategies to earn a living online, far too many to talk about here, but the basics are you create own website, then, you advertise or market your own developed product, or do what is simply the easiest route to take –  the affiliate way.

This is by far the faster and most profitable route, where your join an affiliate program, sell that product and take a commission from the vendor. No worries about investing and carrying stock, delivery etc., simply sell that product, whether it is a physical product or a digital information product or service.

Having said all of that, had I joined an Internet Marketing Service that led me by the hand from the beginning, I could have saved myself an awful lot of time and money. I chased the dream and got sucked in by so many people, offering so many things and untold riches that never seemed to materialise.

Google, the giant king of the internet and its founders Larry King and Sergery Brin have been lurking the waters in fear that Facebook a young six year old private company may be a considerable threat to Google.

In February 2004 what started out as an ivy league email site exclusive to only Harvard students, spread to other ivy league universities like Standford, Columbia and Yale. It was at the Harvard dormitory where Facebook was launched by Zuckerberg and three other partners. Facebook since then has bolted from a humble collegiate site to a massive wide spread social media site.

Nevertheless, Facebook in financial comparison in terms of revenue or profit doesn’t even come close to Google. Google’s revenue for 2009 was 23.65 billion dollars where as Facebook had a humble compared revenue of 1 billion in 2009. Google knows it still makes 22 times more money than Facebook! So why the fear from Google?

A major distinction and possible fear from Google is that Facebook has grown incredibly and ferociously fast with over 400 million users as of April of 2010 with a record speed growth of 185% over the past year, and Googles traffic only grew at 9%. In comparison Google had 3 billion hits in February of 2010 and Facebook had 2.5 billion hits that same month.

Currently, Google allows you to market with adwords PPC campaigns and adsense. Marketing and advertising for renewable energy users like you and me. Google knows its also about the amount of visitors and hits. Google adwords PPC campaigns can be quite expensive and the competition for special key words can be out of this world. A lot of people normally conform to what I call the internet status quo. That is, not many people have thought about using Facebook for renewable energy marketing. The facts are that Facebook is becoming much bigger than Google, much cheaper than Google, offering better targeted advertising inside their ca-coon of fan pages.

In Facebook you can attach social actions to your ads with increased relevance. You can target your audience by specifics like age, and sex any many more parameters. Some marketing experts have actually indicated that Facebook is converting a lot better than Google. Facebook also offers pay per clicks similar to Google but with far more flexibility and much cheaper on your wallet or purse.

In addition, Google is so big today that it has actually kicked out and banned thousands and thousands of advertisers permanently. Back when Google first started they depended on young savvy marketers just like Facebook is depending on young new advertisers today. This is one of the biggest reason why Facebook is so promising to your green business. Their isn’t much competition compared to google and they will treat you with opens arms at this point in time. Most people don’t have the slightest clue in using Facebook as one of their main marketing machine guns.

Now, I’m not saying Facebook should be the only marketing tactic you use. Aside from ezines, you tube, podcasting, and other video or article marketing, you heavily research and consider advertising on Facebook and add it your arsenal of marketing weapons. You don’t fight a war with just a tank brigade right? You still need artillery, naval and air power along with modern cyborg marine grunts on land. Facebook could be that mean lean fighting marine machine you have been waiting for all this time.

In essence realize that all of your other marketing material is promoted in hopes of having it get indexed on main search engines like google so you are found. But unlike google which is a specific index type search engine. Facebook is more of a private portal to business contacts and friends, which is not public like google and not indexed at all like google. Friends and companies get to see what every other company or person is talking about inside their own private roman wall. But not in Facebook. You don’t have to worry about that! Facebook could care less if you are indexed and be part of the the 10 websites ranked among millions in your niche. Are you now starting to see the structure and opposite way Facebooks platform works?

Keep in mind that Facebook is the only earnest competitor to Google right now. So ask yourself, where do you want to position your company and your green marketing. Remember that Google has openly announced in public ” they fear Facebook”. WOW! That’s a heck of statement coming from the king of internet rock n roll. But the time has come when a new company will surpass Google and I believe Facebook will give Google a hell of a fight. So keep an eye Facebook’s growth and consider diversifying your marketing with new tactics and a whole new approach other than just Google AdWords pay per click advertising.

It seems like every type of business is getting on-board with Facebook marketing. If your business is still sitting on the sidelines, it’s time to jump in and play. But before you get started, now is the perfect time to take a look at all the ins and outs of social media marketing.

While these numbers are huge you still have to ask yourself whether Facebook marketing can work for your business. The answer is simple: it depends on you and what you do with it.

Unlocking the Potential of Facebook Marketing

Even if you just consider the power that comes with the sheer volume of 500 million users, by bringing your business idea or niche marketing project to Facebook, you will have a huge opportunity to be seen by more users than ever before. You can attract new users to become “friends”, and turn those Facebook friends into promoters, supporters and eventually clients just by implementing a well-planned strategy. Here are some examples:

An online publication called “Social Media Examiner” was launched in November 2009 by Michael Stelzner. He decided to not launch his publication using any of the traditional marketing methods. Stelzner instead launched his publication only using social marketing networks and Facebook marketing and achieved a number one rating on Technorati for business blogs. By the end of the first quarter, there were nearly 100,000 subscribers at the Examiner. Sound too good to be true? Yet Stelzner experienced a marked increase in sales and overall business.
Target is another example of moving away from sales flyers and traditional business promotions by launching a Party Planning Page. As a direct result of their marketing efforts, Target saw a 6% increase in sales. In fact, Target’s Facebook Fan Page attracted 20% more direct hits by Facebook fans to their store. Additionally, those Facebook fans were found to have spent 33% more than other types of customers.
Morton’s Steakhouse ran a Valentine’s Day photo promotion on Facebook in 2009. As a result, sales and overall business experienced a large difference.

If You Work It, Facebook Works

Facebook marketing received rave reviews from analyst Kevin Ertell at ForeSee Results who stated that, “Facebook by far is the best place online to reach customers,” and he went on to tell business owners, “Get a Facebook page and you will start making money.”

So the question at the end of the day is, does Facebook marketing really work? And the answer, which is the same for many other business-related questions is, if you work it it will work.
